Backpacker BBQ Sliders Recipe With Meat Shredz

When I am backpacking or camping, I love having a good meal. Good, quick, and healthy meals are hard to come back by. You can only eat so many dehydrated pouch meals. That is why I am always looking for alternative things to try, such as recipes from my friend Chef Corso at Montyboca, and putting together things that I come up with on my own.

I love BBQ. But it is so not practical to carry steaks miles up the mountain with no way to refrigerate them and also they weigh a lot. So when I found out about Meat Shredz, I was excited. Meat Shredz is dehydrated pulled pork that is loaded with flavor and is so versatile. I was a little hesitant at first because there are some really low-quality meat alternatives and preserved meat options available, but I really shouldn’t have been. Meat Shredz is made from 100% real meat, contains no preservatives or junk. There are several ways to add it to your meals and all it takes is a little bit of water, broth, or sauce to rehydrate. It is absolutely delicious. **Please note, this product was sent to me free of charge to review. I only review products that I love and have tried for myself.

The guys in my family are all about meat and are very picky. They are absolute carnivores and the weekend is never complete without grilled tri-tip or pot roast. So I figured that the ultimate test would be making something with Meat Shredz and seeing what they thought. It took me exactly 15 minutes to prepare and everyone was dumbfounded that it hadn’t been slow-cooking all day. I made BBQ Pulled Pork Sliders. When I told the guys that I had used dehydrated meat, I think they were all confused and a little blown away because you could not tell by the flavor or by the texture.

This is the perfect recipe for camping or backpacking, or after a long day of snowboarding or fishing. It’s easy and quick to make and can be made on any camp stove. This would also make a great recipe for your next Superbowl or tailgate party. I made these flavorful sliders for New Year Eve. You can also substitute a can or pouch of chicken instead. No one will be able to tell that this didn’t take hours of work.

Backpacker BBQ Sliders With Meat Shredz

These quick sliders can be made in the kitchen or in the backcountry. Everyone will think that you have been slow-cooking the meat for hours. This recipe makes 12 sliders and can easily be cut in half.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Servings 4 People

Ingredients

  • 1 yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 1 tbsp oilorbutter
  • 1 cup BBQ sauce of your choice
  • 2 tbsp water
  • 2 2.2 oz. packages Meat Shredz- any flavor
  • 1 12 count package Hawaiian rolls
  • 1 8-16 oz. jar banana peppers

Instructions

  1. Set the pan on the stovetop or camp stove on low heat. Add oil.

  2. Once the oil is hot, add sliced onions and saute until translucent.

  3. Add BBQ sauce, Meat Shredz, and water.

  4. Cook for five additional minutes until everything is heated through. Remove from heat.

  5. Spoon onto Hawaiian rolls and add banana peppers. Serve hot.

  6. (Optional) Toasted rolls add great flavor and texture.

So easy and so delicious. You can use either the Black Pepper or the Sriracha flavored Meat Shredz. I really want to try it instead of beef jerky in Beef Jerky Stew. Not only is this delicious, but you could never tell that it was dehydrated. Add it to noodles, soups, eggs, fajitas and more as a protein source or even eat it straight out of the bag, it’s so tender.

I love that not only is it healthy because it is all-natural and has no preservatives, but I love that because of its lightweight, it is convenient and can easily be packed on long hikes, backpacking or camping or as a nice ingredient for a quick dinner after you have been working all day. I’ve added it to stir fry and noodles and it was so dang good. I bet my dad would add this to his pantry.

So which flavor do you think that you would like? Is this something you would try? Would you add it to your outdoor adventure menu or your bug out bag? Let us know in the comments below. Don’t let poor quality food keep you from your adventures. Be outside with no limits.

Mmmmmm, sliders! We recently made a similar meal using bbq jackfruit, but yours looks WAY better (not to mention more calorically dense!). Plus, banana peppers are amazing.

My brother in law and nephew are always camping. He cooks all the time (chef by trade), so this is something I think he would enjoy. As you mentioned, who wants to lug all that meat up a mountain when hiking. Thanks for sharing!

Oh my goodness this looks GREAT! I am not very creative in my cooking so I’m totally the kind of person who would rather just buy new seasonings than do something fancy. This is a great option.

These would soooooo be on our menu if we were heading out to camp. I think I would like the black pepper flavor more, but the boys would argue for the spicy sriracha. LOL.
