How to Get Your Kids to Enjoy RV Camping

RV camping can be a great way to enjoy an affordable vacation, allowing you to explore different parts of the country without having to worry about getting on planes. You can take your RV on road trips or simply set up in a RV park and make yourself and your family comfortable. RV camping with kids can be a great way to create memories.

However, if your kids haven’t been on an RV camping trip before, they might be worried that they won’t enjoy it. While different people have different interests, it’s best to make sure your kids have a good time as well. When they’re having fun, it’s easier for you to relax as well.

We started out tent camping with our kids, but now that we are older, we do a lot more RV camping. Every type of camping has its pros and cons, but when you are camping with kids, sometimes RV camping is better. Here are a few ways to get your kids to love RV camping.

Start Small

One of the worst things parents can do if they want their kids to become interested in something is to push too hard and too quickly. If your first RV camping trip is weeks long, miles from home, and far from civilization, your children are going to find it hard to enjoy. You might struggle with it as well.

So, start small. You might decide to just camp for a night or a weekend. If you’re not sure the RV life is for you, rent an RV to try it out. Once you’re used to staying away for shorter periods, you can think about epic road trips and adventures with your RV as a base camp.

Find a Great Location

Speaking of base camps, you want a great location. First, check the local laws about where you can park your RV. In some areas, you may be able to park up anywhere and stay overnight, but in other places, you might need to stay in a specific area to be on the right side of the law. You don’t want to accidentally trespass.

Even if you are able to park up anywhere, there are benefits to using an RV park as your base camp. RV parks are often in areas that allow you to easily access local landmarks and national parks, so they’re a great place to set up camp and come back to while exploring an area.

One of the best things about camping in a dedicated campground or RV park is that there are facilities that you can use to make your stay more enjoyable, including showers and sometimes even access to WiFi.

Keep Them Entertained

Speaking of WiFi, one of the most common complaints you might get about camping is that your kids are bored. If you want them to have fun, give them things to do.

Some areas have activities for kids to get involved with, and they might even meet other kids. You can also play outdoor games or plan hikes or bike rides. Other outdoor activities, like white water rafting and horseback riding might be even more interesting.

Other ways to keep your kids entertained are campfire storytelling or a camping sing-along. Or, especially when you have an RV, special movies that you only watch when you are camping. We will usually snuggle down in the RV and watch some of our favorite movies. The movies we pick are usually nostalgic and classic like:

  • The Great Outdoors
  • The Parent Trap
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  • The Goonies
  • Jumanji

With car camping you have to worry about having enough space to bring stuff. But with RV camping you can bring a long plenty of games and things to do to keep kids entertained like horseshoes, hammcoks and cornhole.

Special Snacks

Though you can make deserts and yummy snacks on a campfire or camp stove, there are some things you can make if you have a camper. Since we started RV camping, some of our favorite camping snacks that really make our truips special are:

  • Microwave popcorn
  • Dump cake
  • Chocolate fondue
  • Hot banana pudding

All of this will make it so your kids are less likely to miss the creature comforts of home, including the screens they might usually access, because there’s plenty to do when camping. What are some of the thigns that you do to get your kids involved in camping?
