Thailand is an absolutely stunning country, with a rapidly growing tourist industry as more and more people visit it. If you’ve never been to Thailand, it’s more than worth discovering why it’s so popular in recent years. Though our family loves camping, we are considering a trip to Thailand next year.
As well as having a lot of natural beauty and welcoming weather at certain times of the year, Thailand is known for its ability to bridge the gap between traditional and modern lifestyles. You can visit a temple or a historic sight one day, then visit a high-tech bustling city the next.
With this in mind, here are a few tips to help you really enjoy your Thai experience.
Learning Language Basics
Thai is a difficult language to master, especially if you have a very different mother tongue. While some younger people in the cities of Thailand will speak English, especially in more touristy areas, many people will either speak very little English or none at all.
Besides, as a general rule, it’s a good idea to show respect to the people you’re speaking to by at least trying to speak a little Thai. This can also help you to get around when you’re trying to order food, ask for directions, or simply greet people and be polite.
While you might not be able to learn a lot of the language, try learning a few simple phrases to help you navigate Thailand. Then, if you want to learn more later on, you can do so. Remember that the best way to learn a language is to speak it.
Enjoying Thai Food
If you love Thai food, you’ll find that Thai food in Thailand itself is a massively different experience. With fresh ingredients and traditional recipes, you’ll enjoy a huge variety of tasty foods that you might like at home, or that you haven’t even heard of.
While Thai Green Curry is delicious, it’s worth exploring other Thai food to find a new favorite.
When you’re in Bangkok, you can find a restaurant near me for some classic cuisine, or you can even explore street food places for some different experiences. Make sure to look for reviews online when trying different restaurants and street food vendors.
Exploring Historic Sights
While the bustling cities of Thailand are amazing, you should also take the time to explore some of the culture and history of Thailand. When visiting these sites, and especially temples, try to be as respectful as possible.
Don’t touch or damage things unnecessarily, and consider using a tour guide who can explain what things are so you can get context for what you see.
The Natural Beauty of Thailand
Of course, if you want a true adventure in Thailand, you should explore some of the natural sights. You can travel by boat to explore the coasts and waterways around Thailand, and you can see some truly amazing views this way.
You can also hike or ride a bike in Thailand and visit the national parks, but make sure that you’re familiar with the route so you don’t get lost.
