Mama Bear Review: Trail Meals Cookbook

If you have been following along, then you already know that I am a huge fan of MONTyBOCA. And if you haven’t, I am going to tell you about something that will change the way you eat on all of your outdoor adventures. What is MONTyBOCA? MONTyBOCA was created by Chef Corso, an online community that is revolutionizing the way people eat on the trails and outdoors. Chef Corso strongly believes that you should eat well and fuel your body and mind with creative and healthy meals, without compromising ingredients and flavor.

This past December, he published his first-ever cookbook, the pocket-size “Trail Meals: Origin Edition”. With twenty delicious recipes, this little book should be added to anyone’s backpack, adventure kit or bug out bag. It also comes in a digital format for your smart phone and was included in Outside Magazine’s Best Cook Books of 2019 list. There are six sections to this book:

  • Checklists – gear and equipment checklists for your next adventure
  • Breakfast – breakfast recipes like Dirtbag Egg Benedict and Brekkie Skillet With Chicken Sausage
  • Lunch- lunch recipes like German Potato Salad and Moroccan Couscous
  • Dinner – dinner recipes like Turkey Day Stuffing Bowl and Jambalaya
  • Dessert- dessert recipes Blueberry Lemon Rice Crispy Bowl and Chocolate Marshmallow Fondue
  • Trailgate- snacks and trailhead meal recipes like Nacho Y Nachos and Honey Sriracha Popcorn

I have tried every recipe in that book and a few more, and our family favorites are the Dirtbag Egg Benedict, the Caramelized Bananas With ‘Nilla Wafers and the Garlic Chicken With Artichokes and Mashed Potatoes.

Each recipe has no more than ten ingredients, includes the weight of all ingredients for the meal and tips. As a family, this has really elevated our food experiences on the trail. So much in fact, that we are signed up as recipe testers. Chef Corso wants to build a food community, and we are helping with that, by trying out new recipes that get uploaded to the MONTyBOCA website. Sign up to be a recipe tester here.

So if you love the outdoors and want to try something new, I encourage you to either purchase this little book which weighs just a few ounces and fits into almost any pocket, to revolutionize your food experience the next time you camp, hike, backpack, cycle or hit the snow. And if you are not an outdoorsy person, then consider these great recipes for your next sporting event and roadtrip, by cooking them on your tail gate or the side of the road. Our family has created some wonderful food memories with the recipes from this book. Don’t let a crappy trail meal get in the way of your next adventure. Be outside with no limits.

That dirtbag egg benedict looks absolutely amazing! I haven’t camped for a while, but when I did it the food was dehydrated, canned, and bland. Your photos here sure don’t look like camping food! What a great little cookbook!

I am always impressed by your camping meals Pauline. We both know I’m not a camping kind of a girl, but if I did, I’d want you to be both my guide and chef!

Your pictures look delicious. We bought an RV last year and are hoping to get out and do a lot of camping this fall, so a cookbook like this would come in handy. Thanks for sharing.

We annually trek into the BWCA to portage & pack a circuit of wilderness. I will definitely be consulting this book for lightweight food recipes! Thanks for sharing the find!
