Smelly Proof Bags Are For Outdoor Adventures

At home, if I have something smelly, it either goes into the trash or into the wash. That’s the biggest problem that I have when I go hiking, backpacking, or camping because there is no washer and no animal-proof trash. We are gone for days. I practice the Leave No Trace Principles, pack it in/ pack it, and try to prevent attracting unwanted animals. It can be challenging, especially with bears and attractants, like dirty clothes and diapers and even raw fish from our fishing trips. These bags are great for:

  • use at home
  • backpacking
  • camping
  • hiking
  • kayaking
  • fishing
  • winter sports like skiing and snowboarding

The worst thing is when you are backpacking with little kids who still wear diapers and you have to pack those out. We also have smelly stuff at home, like onions or garlic or cheese.  My dad likes to tell a story about how he bought this stinky and smelly cheese called Tallagio (worse than Limburger, smells awful but is so creamy and delicious). The car and fridge stank for a week, and he stills buys it. He needs these bags.

That’s why, when I heard about Smelly Proof Bags, I was excited. We have a huge bear problem at home, but we also go to places with lots of other wildlife and it’s never a good idea to tempt them. I have dogs too, and I carry doggy bags with me.  So, finding something that would reduce and even eliminate some of these issues, sounded great to me. I don’t like hauling stinky trash, picking up trash after something has gotten into it (we’ve tried EVERYTHING to keep animals out even electricity which doesn’t work) or diapers and dog poop. Not only are these bags smell-proof, they are the most durable reusable bag I have ever used.

We are an outdoorsy family too, so these bags are really handy especially for outdoor adventures like camping and hiking. They are perfect for any type of waste, but they are great for storing food too. Here’s how I use these bags the most:

  • at home for raw meat, storing leftovers and smelly foods in the fridge
  • at home in the trash when I have pungent waste (it helps my bear problem)
  • at home in the freezer for storing garden seeds, meat, and food
  • for food when camping, so as not to attract bears and other wild animals
  • for human waste and female hygiene products while backpacking, pack it in/ pack it out (the black bags are perfect for this)
  • while fishing, for fresh-caught fish or disposing of fish guts
This Bear loves trash… and mud

I doubted the Smelly Proof Bags at first before I tried them, because other reusable bags don’t work that well and I’ve found myself double-bagging everything. I decided to test these bags. It’s not bear season, but I have a lovely rottweiler that loves to get in the trash.  Plus, there are lots of squirrels and raccoons too. It is also the beginning of sports season, and my daughter always forgets her socks and uniform in the car. I put dirty clothes in a bag in the car, and left dog food and bird seed in these bags on the porch for several weeks. Guess what? The bags on the porch were undisturbed and my car didn’t smell. Woohoo! Smelly Proof Bags are a must-have item to add to the camping box, backpacks and camper. I also stashed a few in the car and ATV for diaper changes and food waste.

An onion and garlic, and the fridge still smells good

Not only do I love that they keep the smell in, there are a few other reasons why I loved them. Smelly Proof Bags come in black (for when you don’t want to see what is inside) or clear. There are also multiple sizes: S 6” x 4”, M 6.5” x 7.5” L 8.5” x 10” and XL 12” x 16” . Not only is there a variety, but they reseal and can be washed again and again, so you can use them multiple times. Being able to use something multiple times keeps less plastic out of the landfill. And, because you can reuse them, it also makes it very affordable. They are very heavy duty and can withstand multiple washes without getting holes or tears and I did not have any issues with the seal getting worn. These bags do not  retain smell either. Smelly Proof Bags are great for at home, for your fridge,  your car, hiking and backpacking, outdoor activities, camper, camping box and diaper bag. An absolute must too for fresh fish.

I am going to start using them for the bird seed and the chicken feed so the bears will stop trying to invade my shed. This product has also been really fantastic for smelly trash outside that I can’t compost or give to the chickens or dogs. I haven’t had anything get into the trash in weeks. And, I’ll be sure to send my dad a few for his smelly cheese. I think the rest of the family will appreciate it for the next time he buys that or some of his other weird and smelly food.

And recently, they have now come out with a child-resistant bag, that makes it more difficult for kids to open. This is awesome for things like first aid kits and other things you do not want the kids to get into.

Thank you Smelly Proof Bags!! I really like products that reduce waste and are practical. You don’t have to use these for just stuff that is pungent. You can also use these to separate food items in the fridge, for snacks or other food storage, keeping messy items separate from your other stuff and traveling. You can use them again and again, so it is a great item to keep in the house too. You can find out more about this product here. Don’t let smelly stuff get in the way of your adventures. As always, be outside with no limits. Love, Pauline

Wow, I had never heard of these, that’s so cool!! I’m not a camper, but I think these would be great for any outdoor activities like picnics, sporting events, and traveling in general (on road trips, overseas, etc.) especially if you have kids! These would also be nice house-warming and baby shower presents! Thank you!

We love our Smelly Proof bags. I use them for pre-chopped onions that I put in the freezer, pre-shredded chicken that I put in the freezer, slices of bell pepper or lemons in the fridge, and we even use one for our quarters that we take to the laundromat when we’re RVing.

So glad o came across this post. I can think of so many great uses for these bags. You take for granted that all bags would be smelly proof, but they definitely are not.
